Previously, he held various positions including Principal Officer, UN System Staff College, Turin, Italy (2000-2008), Senior Policy Advisor, UNICEF, New York, Dhaka, Bangkok (1992-2000), Director-General, Ministry of Health (1989-1992) & Faculty Member, Institute of Economics, Yangon (1966-1989)

Prof Aung has a B.Com. (Yangon) & a Post-graduate Diploma in Management Studies (Brighton), M.Sc. Operations Research from University of Warwick, Ph.D. Management Sciences from University of Manchester & a Post-doctoral Fellow from University of Marburg
